Industry standards have identified the need to classify buried services according to their positional accuracy and certainty.  The definition of these classes is listed below.

Class B – The use of electromagnetic locating equipment to pinpoint position along with indicative depth.

Class A – Positive identification of buried assets and depths by manual excavation or non-destructive digging.

A common approach is to initially classify the presence and location of any underground assets and then to further enhance the safety of the dig by pinpointing utilities to Class B and/or Class A.

In order to satisfy the requirements of a class A locate, services need to be positively identified and recorded.  The most common method of exposing underground assets is vacuum excavation.  This technique uses either compressed air or pressurised water to loosen the substrate with the material then vacuumed into a holding tank.  Vacuum excavation or hydro-digging has become popular because of the value it can add to a locate and/or project.
